Bioanalyst — Annotation
Job Description
A position as Programmer/Bioanalyst in the annotation group is
available at The Genome Center at Washington University School of
Medicine in St. Louis. The candidate will be part of an established
annotation group focused on developing methods and implementing
approaches to gene prediction and annotation in prokaryotic and
eukaryotic genomes.
The candidate’s responsibilities can include, but are not
limited to, evaluating and modifying existing gene prediction
algorithms, developing annotation assessment tools, developing
approaches to further increase the sensitivity and specificity of the
gene prediction pipelines through the use of sound validation and
comparative procedures, support of the annotation submissions, as
well as methods to further enhance the automation of established and
developing pipelines.
The Genome Center has been at the forefront of genome research
since its inception in 1993. A world-leader in the generation and
public dissemination of high-quality genomic sequence, the Genome
Center is developing and refining the general theories and practices
of DNA sequencing, providing value-added biologically and
clinically-relevant sequence analysis, and fostering public
understanding of science through various educational and outreach
efforts.
Job Qualifications
Applicants should be outstanding in
their drive, eagerness and scientific imagination, as well as
organized and self-motivated. Applicants should be able to work
semi-independently in a group environment. Flexibility and
team-orientation are critical; must be detail-oriented and willing to
evaluate the quality of one's own work. Familiarity with BioPerl,
Object-Oriented Programming and large scale data management is a
plus.
Applications from individuals with
(but not limited to) experience in molecular biology, genetics,
genomics and bioinformatics are particularly encouraged. Applicants
are expected to be familiar with frequently used bioinformatic tools
(BLAST, Interproscan, Kegg, NCBI and associated tools), databases
(MySQL, Oracle), Perl scripting language, and to be comfortable
working on UNIX/Linux platform.
Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum requirements are MS degree in computational sciences with
a solid biology background or a bachelor degree in biology with a
sold computational background. The position is available immediately;
however, the starting date is flexible.
